It’s been a good run for the Teutul clan, but all good things come to an end TLC Cancels OCC's American Chopper

It’s been a good run for the Teutul clan, but all good things come to an end, and after a seven-year run, American Chopper will be taking its final ride into the sunset. The Learning Channel is pulling the plug on the reality TV show that has brought the foibles and follies of the custom bike building crew from upstate New York into millions of living rooms. The last episode is set to air this Thursday, February 11, at 9 p.m. (8 Central).

While the show has progressively been on decline, it hit rock bottom when it lost the dynamic that was the most appealing, the terse but real relationship between a father and his sons. If you’ve ever worked with family, you know it isn’t easy. Throw in the mix cameras following you everywhere, TV ratings, the trappings of fame, an intense production and promotional schedule, and there’s more than enough catalysts to send relationships to the breaking point. And right now the Teutul clan is broken. The hit show has sunk low since two of the original Teutul trio have stopped speaking to their father. There’s a Junior vs. Senior lawsuit pitting son against father currently being contested. The timing of the show’s demise couldn’t have come at a better time because there are bigger issues that need to be resolved. Maybe Senior can remember that blood is thicker than water.

WD-40 and BFGoodrich/Hurst Vehicles Bring Big Bucks for Kids

Among the rare, classic and custom vehicles on the block at last weekend’s Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction were two special vehicles that raised money for children in need.

The WD-40/SEMA Cares Camaro—a custom 2010 Camaro SS/RS—was sold for $75,000. Proceeds from the sale will benefit Childhelp and Victory Junction Gang Camp, two charities that SEMA actively supports.
The second vehicle, the 2010 BFGoodrich/Hurst Mustang, sold for $120,000. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of the Mustang benefit the newest Victory Junction Gang Camp in Kansas City, Kansas.

The one and only original pace car from the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Series, the 2010 BFGoodrich/Hurst Mustang was built by Hurst Performance in conjunction with Woodhouse Auto Family of Blair, Nebraska, and BFGoodrich. NASCAR has announced that it will relax some on-track rules, putting racing back in drivers’ hands in 2010

Bogity, Bogity, Bogity Boys – Lets get ready to go Racin!!!

The changes, which begin with next month’s season-opening events at Daytona International Speedway, will allow drivers to be even more competitive.

Race rule changes were one of several announcements during Thursday’s annual Media Tour presentation at NASCAR’s Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C.

NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France said the loosening of on-track reins is another step in enhancing competition and back-to-basics racing.

“Over the past 10 years we’ve dramatically increased safety and that mission continues. However, it’s time for us to allow the drivers to drive. We don’t want the rules and regulations to get in the way of great racing and fantastic finishes,” France said.

“NASCAR is a contact sport—our history is based on banging fenders.”

Among the changes:

• Bump-drafting rules will be eliminated at Daytona and Talladega Superspeedway. Teams also will use a bigger restrictor plate at Daytona.

Eliminating bump-drafting rules puts responsibility for on-track moves squarely back in drivers’ hands. Larger restrictor plates give drivers more horsepower.

• The wing mounted on the rear on the Sprint Cup Series’ new car will be replaced with a spoiler. A full-field test is scheduled for March 23-24 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Following that, a decision on when to implement the spoiler will be made based on teams’ input. The switch from wing to spoiler will return to a more traditional stock-car look.

“Over the last couple of years, there have been dozens of changes to this car, with this being the most visible change,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR’s vice president of competition.

• Cup Series director John Darby has been promoted to managing director of competition, with oversight of all three national series’ directors, officials, inspection processes and race officiating. He will continue in his series director’s role until his successor is found.

“Probably no one is more qualified for this new job than John,” Pemberton said. “He knows and understands the officiating and inspection processes better than anyone and is the perfect fit.”

Other changes announced Thursday:

• Mike Fisher, managing director of NASCAR’s R&D Center, has some additions to his team. They include Brett Bodine as the director of racing, Tom Gideon as director of safety and Jamie DiPietro as manager of safety inspections.

• Beginning with the Feb. 13 season opener at Daytona, Nationwide Series teams will be limited to 15 crew members, including the driver, crew chief, spotter and seven over-the-wall pit-crew members. Teams also won’t be required to provide a scorer. Last year teams had no limit on at-track crew members.

• Nationwide Series teams may run no more than two races in 2010 without using an engine sealed by series officials. Last year they could run three races before using a sealed engine.

• Camping World Truck Series teams will use double-file restarts “shootout style” in 2010, making restart rules uniform across all three national series. Teams also will return to traditional pit stops, eliminating last year’s procedure of refueling and changing tires on separate stops. Teams also may use a new, vented fuel dump can, eliminating the need for a catch can.

Toyota has yet another recall...

From msnbc.com news services

Toyota issued a recall for 2.3 million late model cars, SUVs and pickup trucks Thursday, acting after “isolated reports” of sticking accelerator pedals.

This action is separate from an ongoing recall of about 4.2 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles to reduce the risk of pedal “entrapment” caused by floor mats, according to a news release issued by Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. About 1.7 million Toyota vehicles are subject to both recalls, the company said.

“In recent months, Toyota has investigated isolated reports of sticking accelerator pedal mechanisms in certain vehicles without the presence of floor mats,” Toyota group Vice President Irv Miller said in the statement.

In “rare instances” the accelerator pedal may stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position, he said.

Affected vehicles are:

• 2009-2010 RAV4
• 2009-2010 Corolla
• 2009-2010 Matrix
• 2005-2010 Avalon
• 2007-2010 Camry
• 2010 Highlander
• 2007-2010 Tundra
• 2008-2010 Sequoia

First Car show of the year European Auto Garage in Knoxville, Tennessee

Saturday we decided to hit the first car show of the year. With a high for the day fast approaching 20 degrees it was a little tough to get my wife to go with me. But after promising to go by Lowes and get stuff to fix projects around the house she decided to go with me. We arrived at European Auto Garage in Knoxville, Tennessee around 11:00 about an hour before the end of the show. Man I was shocked – They had a bunch of cars present even on the very cold day. What was even more impressive was that there were hundreds of people there looking at the import cars. I would have believed an inside show would draw a good crowd but this was outside as I said in the cold. My goodness it is only January and people are starting to get cabin fever already. Of course, I was there too proving that any day is a good day when you get the chance to get out and see great cars especially when you have someone that puts up with you and likes the cars as much as you do! Come on spring – We are waiting on you.

Oh goodness – first it was “Cash for Clunkers” now “Cash for Caulkers”?

Oh goodness – first it was “Cash for Clunkers” now “Cash for Caulkers”?

You got to be kidding me. With all the current problems that our great country keeps trying to dig out from underneath the best that we can do is insulate our homes? It just makes me wonder why in the world we keep electing these goobers and not small business people to run the country. These elected officials have no idea how to run a business they do not know how to make money or meet an payroll – just how to spend money that they do not have!!

Reporting from Washington - Declaring that insulation is "sexy," President Obama today pushed Congress to create a program giving homeowners cash incentives to improve their energy efficiency by replacing windows, caulking leaks and modernizing heaters and air conditioners.

Last Chance To Act Before USFS Decides Tellico Closure Appeals

This is your last chance to make a difference in the Rescue Tellico fight before the Forest Service makes a decision on the appeals that have been filed. I'm trying to make this as easy as possible, it is up to YOU to follow through!

Go here: http://www.votesmart.org/index.htm , type in your zip and get a list of your elected officials email addresses. Copy and paste the following and send it to them ASAP!

Dear Congressman/Senator,

I know you are busy, especially at this time of year, but I wonder if you are actually aware of the issue at stake in the public’s struggle with the Forest Service over access to the Upper Tellico OHV trails! In short, The Forest Service has been negligent in performing maintenance on OHV trails at the Upper Tellico OHV area for 15 years. Now they have decided to close public access instead of fixing their mess! This type of shoddy work on behalf of the American public CANNOT be allowed to happen! WHO will be held accountable? If the FS is allowed to proceed with this closure it will open a door to closure of public access in the entire United States! Who will stand in the gap?

Here is a link to the appeal filed by the Southern Four Wheel Drive Association & Blueribbon Coalition: http://www.sfwda.org/forum/uploads/3...IA_27Nov09.pdf

Here is a link to the appeal filed by SFWDA Member Flint Holbrook, Flint is a Registered Professional Engineer in TN, KY, OH, WV, NC & SC and is a Registered Professional Hydrologist with over 25 years of experience in the field. http://www.sfwda.org/forum/uploads/3...IA_27Nov09.pdf
The FS has insisted on conference calls for contact instead of face to face meetings, has denied all off the requests in Flint's appeal including 1 day access to the trails by vehicle to confirm FS assertions and his FOIA requests.

The FS is stonewalling access advocates at each turn and "checking off their box" as having followed the rules of mandate if not ethics!

Both of these appeals are professionally written and contain numerous scientific, procedural and ethical examples of FS malfeasance in managing the Upper Tellico OHV area!

I know my elected officials are having a hard time in DC right now with everything else going on but if the FS is allowed to exhibit this type of malfeasance and get away with it where will it stop? Who will be held accountable to the American people for not doing their job and when?

Without some type of pressure from responsible agency USDA and my elected officials the FS will continue to close public access to public lands at their own discretion!

The 45 day appeal window is now closed. The FS Deciding Officer, one of their own hand picked representatives, will make a decision by January 14, 2010. PLEASE help motorized recreation Americans protect our access to public lands!

What happened to selling yourself?

What happened to selling yourself?

My son who is attending NASCAR Technical institute in Mooresville, NC has had a heck of a time finding a job. He needs work to be able to pay for gas and food his mom and I are taking care of the rest of his bills till he graduates. After having car problems 10 days ago and not coming home for the Thanksgiving holiday he finally called and asks for help.
So I took a day off and headed 300 plus miles over to see if I could figure out what was wrong with the car. It seems that the upper radiator hose got a hole in it near the thermostat neck. He cut of the bad part of the hose and re-attached it. This in turn broke the plastic radiator. When he tried to find a hose no one had one that would work. I went to NAPA and they had both hoses. I found a new radiator on eBay shipped to the house for $100.00 (Christmas time project). So I glue the new hose on to the broken radiator and let it cure. The hose holds – go fill the car up with fuel and drive it for 20 miles of so to make sure that it holds. All is good on project number one.
Now on to NTI – I want to check on the job board for possible job openings. Luckily there is a bunch of them and I start writing down the numbers so that he can get the contact info for them. Here is where is get weird to me. You can not just go in and fill out a job application anymore. All of the jobs have to be applied for on line and then contact the employer. So how do you get a chance to even get an interview for a job? It seems to me that when you get to apply in person you have the chance of making that impact of “Here I am”. The fact that these are entry level, not for management seems to me that a young guy or gal really has no chance unless they are friends with the owner or know someone that works there. Heck – what is you do not have internet access? Just makes me wonder how the next generation will enter the work place unless they are very internet savvy… Of course most of them are! There were two jobs that did not require applying on-line… a pizza place and a carwash. So, if anyone knows of a job in the Mooresville, NC area needing an 18 year old gear head – please let me know.

Which Winch do you prefer, use or going to purchase?

Which Winch do you prefer, use or going to purchase?

Today while sorting out pictures from events we covered and attended this year 2009 - I noticed a new trend. In the old days, just a few years ago all you ever saw on the front of truck, Jeep or SUV was the big red “W” of Warn winches. Over the last couple of years it seems that there is a bunch of new winches appearing on vehicles everywhere.

That made me starting thinking –
• Which winch do you like?
• Why do you like it?
• What made you decide to buy the Winch that you have?
• If you are going to buy a winch what do you look for before purchasing?

We have been a fan of Warn winches and hubs since my first 8274 that I bought at Jims Off Road in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 1982. Personally I have owned several different vehicles that have all had Warn winches on them. Except for a short while when there was a Ramsey winch on the front of my Camo CJ-7 Jeep. It was a good winch just so slow that you could shave while waiting on it to spool in. I have worked on Warn M10000 winches that were built in the early 70’s that only needed a little seal and solenoid work. Even on my current Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ it has a warn M8000 on it with an ARB Bull Bumper. My son is looking to put a winch on the front of his Jeep Cherokee XJ and has looked at several different models that are much less expensive. He explained that the cost was a big part of him deciding which winch. Let me know your thoughts please – I would really like to know if there might soon be a new “King of the Hill” in the winch market~!

SEMA - Is there a problem in traveling with all the sickness that is going on right now?

SEMA - Is there a problem in traveling with all the sickness that is going on right now?

While working on preparations for attending the SEMA show in Las Vegas next week I was listening to the radio news stories. There is story after story about the Flu and the H1N1 virus going on all over the country. The PowerandPlay crew will be trapped on jets and in airports for almost 10 hours just to get to the event. Is there a problem in traveling with all the sickness that is going on now? It seems that when ever I travel - I get the seat next to the weird person on the jet or the person that wants to read a book on the red eye flight. Does this also put us at risk of catching the flu just to go to the SEMA show?
This made me start thinking – What is everyone doing if anything to try and keep from catching anything while trapped on a jet or in airports? Is there anything that you can really do?
I am excited about seeing all the hot new products presented by the manufactures. Awesome cars and trucks that have cutting edge appeal and make for a lot of great pictures. Let’s see how the manufactures are going to do business in 2010. Are they going to keeping laying low and waiting for the market to come back or who will be the ones that are charging ahead and “Going Out for Business” not “Going out of Business”?
Good friends, great show and the best food makes the trip a must for anyone in the industry.
