Oh goodness – first it was “Cash for Clunkers” now “Cash for Caulkers”?

Oh goodness – first it was “Cash for Clunkers” now “Cash for Caulkers”?

You got to be kidding me. With all the current problems that our great country keeps trying to dig out from underneath the best that we can do is insulate our homes? It just makes me wonder why in the world we keep electing these goobers and not small business people to run the country. These elected officials have no idea how to run a business they do not know how to make money or meet an payroll – just how to spend money that they do not have!!

Reporting from Washington - Declaring that insulation is "sexy," President Obama today pushed Congress to create a program giving homeowners cash incentives to improve their energy efficiency by replacing windows, caulking leaks and modernizing heaters and air conditioners.

Last Chance To Act Before USFS Decides Tellico Closure Appeals

This is your last chance to make a difference in the Rescue Tellico fight before the Forest Service makes a decision on the appeals that have been filed. I'm trying to make this as easy as possible, it is up to YOU to follow through!

Go here: http://www.votesmart.org/index.htm , type in your zip and get a list of your elected officials email addresses. Copy and paste the following and send it to them ASAP!

Dear Congressman/Senator,

I know you are busy, especially at this time of year, but I wonder if you are actually aware of the issue at stake in the public’s struggle with the Forest Service over access to the Upper Tellico OHV trails! In short, The Forest Service has been negligent in performing maintenance on OHV trails at the Upper Tellico OHV area for 15 years. Now they have decided to close public access instead of fixing their mess! This type of shoddy work on behalf of the American public CANNOT be allowed to happen! WHO will be held accountable? If the FS is allowed to proceed with this closure it will open a door to closure of public access in the entire United States! Who will stand in the gap?

Here is a link to the appeal filed by the Southern Four Wheel Drive Association & Blueribbon Coalition: http://www.sfwda.org/forum/uploads/3...IA_27Nov09.pdf

Here is a link to the appeal filed by SFWDA Member Flint Holbrook, Flint is a Registered Professional Engineer in TN, KY, OH, WV, NC & SC and is a Registered Professional Hydrologist with over 25 years of experience in the field. http://www.sfwda.org/forum/uploads/3...IA_27Nov09.pdf
The FS has insisted on conference calls for contact instead of face to face meetings, has denied all off the requests in Flint's appeal including 1 day access to the trails by vehicle to confirm FS assertions and his FOIA requests.

The FS is stonewalling access advocates at each turn and "checking off their box" as having followed the rules of mandate if not ethics!

Both of these appeals are professionally written and contain numerous scientific, procedural and ethical examples of FS malfeasance in managing the Upper Tellico OHV area!

I know my elected officials are having a hard time in DC right now with everything else going on but if the FS is allowed to exhibit this type of malfeasance and get away with it where will it stop? Who will be held accountable to the American people for not doing their job and when?

Without some type of pressure from responsible agency USDA and my elected officials the FS will continue to close public access to public lands at their own discretion!

The 45 day appeal window is now closed. The FS Deciding Officer, one of their own hand picked representatives, will make a decision by January 14, 2010. PLEASE help motorized recreation Americans protect our access to public lands!

What happened to selling yourself?

What happened to selling yourself?

My son who is attending NASCAR Technical institute in Mooresville, NC has had a heck of a time finding a job. He needs work to be able to pay for gas and food his mom and I are taking care of the rest of his bills till he graduates. After having car problems 10 days ago and not coming home for the Thanksgiving holiday he finally called and asks for help.
So I took a day off and headed 300 plus miles over to see if I could figure out what was wrong with the car. It seems that the upper radiator hose got a hole in it near the thermostat neck. He cut of the bad part of the hose and re-attached it. This in turn broke the plastic radiator. When he tried to find a hose no one had one that would work. I went to NAPA and they had both hoses. I found a new radiator on eBay shipped to the house for $100.00 (Christmas time project). So I glue the new hose on to the broken radiator and let it cure. The hose holds – go fill the car up with fuel and drive it for 20 miles of so to make sure that it holds. All is good on project number one.
Now on to NTI – I want to check on the job board for possible job openings. Luckily there is a bunch of them and I start writing down the numbers so that he can get the contact info for them. Here is where is get weird to me. You can not just go in and fill out a job application anymore. All of the jobs have to be applied for on line and then contact the employer. So how do you get a chance to even get an interview for a job? It seems to me that when you get to apply in person you have the chance of making that impact of “Here I am”. The fact that these are entry level, not for management seems to me that a young guy or gal really has no chance unless they are friends with the owner or know someone that works there. Heck – what is you do not have internet access? Just makes me wonder how the next generation will enter the work place unless they are very internet savvy… Of course most of them are! There were two jobs that did not require applying on-line… a pizza place and a carwash. So, if anyone knows of a job in the Mooresville, NC area needing an 18 year old gear head – please let me know.

Which Winch do you prefer, use or going to purchase?

Which Winch do you prefer, use or going to purchase?

Today while sorting out pictures from events we covered and attended this year 2009 - I noticed a new trend. In the old days, just a few years ago all you ever saw on the front of truck, Jeep or SUV was the big red “W” of Warn winches. Over the last couple of years it seems that there is a bunch of new winches appearing on vehicles everywhere.

That made me starting thinking –
• Which winch do you like?
• Why do you like it?
• What made you decide to buy the Winch that you have?
• If you are going to buy a winch what do you look for before purchasing?

We have been a fan of Warn winches and hubs since my first 8274 that I bought at Jims Off Road in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 1982. Personally I have owned several different vehicles that have all had Warn winches on them. Except for a short while when there was a Ramsey winch on the front of my Camo CJ-7 Jeep. It was a good winch just so slow that you could shave while waiting on it to spool in. I have worked on Warn M10000 winches that were built in the early 70’s that only needed a little seal and solenoid work. Even on my current Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ it has a warn M8000 on it with an ARB Bull Bumper. My son is looking to put a winch on the front of his Jeep Cherokee XJ and has looked at several different models that are much less expensive. He explained that the cost was a big part of him deciding which winch. Let me know your thoughts please – I would really like to know if there might soon be a new “King of the Hill” in the winch market~!

SEMA - Is there a problem in traveling with all the sickness that is going on right now?

SEMA - Is there a problem in traveling with all the sickness that is going on right now?

While working on preparations for attending the SEMA show in Las Vegas next week I was listening to the radio news stories. There is story after story about the Flu and the H1N1 virus going on all over the country. The PowerandPlay crew will be trapped on jets and in airports for almost 10 hours just to get to the event. Is there a problem in traveling with all the sickness that is going on now? It seems that when ever I travel - I get the seat next to the weird person on the jet or the person that wants to read a book on the red eye flight. Does this also put us at risk of catching the flu just to go to the SEMA show?
This made me start thinking – What is everyone doing if anything to try and keep from catching anything while trapped on a jet or in airports? Is there anything that you can really do?
I am excited about seeing all the hot new products presented by the manufactures. Awesome cars and trucks that have cutting edge appeal and make for a lot of great pictures. Let’s see how the manufactures are going to do business in 2010. Are they going to keeping laying low and waiting for the market to come back or who will be the ones that are charging ahead and “Going Out for Business” not “Going out of Business”?
Good friends, great show and the best food makes the trip a must for anyone in the industry.

Forest Service study says negative effect on local economy will be minimal – Yep and national health care will pay for its self!

Forest Service study says negative effect on local economy will be minimal – Yep and national health care will pay for its self!

PowerandPlay.com - This is all so classic of our NEW world government of the future. It is also a lot of BS. The economic impact of Dixie Run 2009 to the Sparta Tennessee area was 1.5 million dollars. The study that the local forest service claims is no where near what...... the private and Government trails teams studies found. Compare a tank of fuel in a truck to a motorcycle. The food purchased to carry in a truck as opposed to carried on a motorcycle - They have killed the local economy and do not care. Tell me which carries more and causes the most economic impact!! The greenies are once again moving to make sure that their agenda is carried out no matter what happens to REAL people~!

RECREATIONAL GROUPS DECRY TELLICO CLOSURE

From John Craven – Public Relations Director For SFWDA

RECREATIONAL GROUPS DECRY TELLICO CLOSURE

October 15, 2009

Conservation groups dedicated to active and sustainable management of the Upper Tellico OHV Area expressed deep disappointment with the U.S. Forest Service decision to permanently close the Tellico trails. The decision, which follows an earlier “temporary” closure, was announced in documents published by the USFS yesterday morning.

Gary Parsons, President of the Southern Four Wheel Drive Association, reacted by saying, “the Forest Service is simply wrong in this decision. This public agency has ignored an independent study by Caliber Engineering and the recommendations of its own Trails Unlimited Team, which demonstrated effective management is attainable and offered specific suggestions to achieve that goal.”

The agency announcement by Forest Supervisor, Marisue Hillard again parroted the water quality issues long favored by preservationist special interests as the excuse for closure. Jay Bird, Chairman of the Rescue Tellico Committee noted, “the Tellico River is in excellent shape and complies with all legal requirements. Only through blatant modification of proper methodology, such as measuring turbidity levels during peak runoff, can the Forest Service claim there is legal basis to take any action, let alone closure.”

“Sadly, we are not surprised. It now appears the Forest Service knew it would close the Area years ago, and undertook the intervening “public process” to justify a decision already made,” said Greg Mumm, Executive Director of the BlueRibbon Coalition. “We are sorely disappointed that the Forest Service has determined it cannot effectively manage the Upper Tellico OHV Area that users have supported with millions of dollars in fees and thousands of hours of volunteer labor. With our recreational partners we will evaluate all options that may change that determination.”

To All Southern Four Wheel Drive Association Members and Supporters

October 14, 2009
To All Southern Four Wheel Drive Association Members and Supporters:
The long awaited Forest Service decision concerning the fate of the Upper Tellico OHV Area is now known. In a conversation with Forest Supervisor Marisue Hilliard I was informed of agency’s decision to permanently close this beautiful area. I don’t think anyone is surprised by the decision based on Forest Service’s past comments and published preferred alternative. We are however extremely disappointed in this decision and as I told Marisue during our conversation we believe that they are wrong in making this decision.
From an association stand point, we will handle this professionally and along with Blue Ribbon Coalition and United Four Wheel Drive Associations move forward with the battle to get this area back open. While not the decision we wanted, it is the decision we have been handed and we now know the direction we must follow. More information will be shared over the next few days but I wanted to get this message out to everyone today.
Let RESCUE TELLICO be the battle cry! We have only begun to fight.
Thanks for your support,
Gary Parsons President Southern Four Wheel Drive Association

U.S. Forest Service Announces Decision on Upper Tellico OHV Trails System

U.S. Forest Service Announces Decision on Upper Tellico OHV Trails System
ASHEVILLE, NC ….The US Forest Service announced today that it is permanently closing the Upper Tellico OHV trail system in order to correct serious erosion problems in the Upper Tellico River watershed in Cherokee County, NC.
"When we first began our analysis we hoped we could make repairs and modifications to the existing OHV Trail system that would correct the water quality problems while still allowing for some level of OHV use in this area to continue," said National Forests in North Carolina Supervisor Marisue Hilliard. "Unfortunately we discovered that repairing the existing problems and maintaining these Upper Tellico OHV trails in the future would be much more difficult than we expected," Hilliard said.
"Our analysis has shown the problems to be worse than we first thought," said Forest Supervisor Hilliard. "The 39 mile Upper Tellico OHV Trail System is currently contributing unacceptable levels of sediment into the Tellico River and its tributaries. The Forest Service is in violation of its own standards and North Carolina state water quality standards because visible sediment from the OHV trails is reaching the Tellico River and its tributaries in hundreds of locations. Many of the trails are on steep slopes and they all occur on very erodible soils. Much of the Tellico OHV trail system runs parallel to streams in the area, with over six miles within 100 feet of streams. The locations of these trails make it extremely difficult to prevent sediment from reaching the streams even if we are successful in repairing existing problems. " Hilliard said.
-more-
In February, 2009, the Forest Service sought public comment on a detailed environmental assessment which looked at six alternatives for future management of the Upper Tellico OHV trail system including a preferred alternative of closing the OHV trail system.
"After careful considering the 2,400 public comments we received and thoroughly reviewing all alternatives in the environmental assessment, I have selected Alternative C, which closes the OHV System," said Hilliard. "While we are closing the 39 mile OHV Trail system we will be keeping 13 miles of FS system roads in the area open year round or seasonally for highway legal vehicles. This will provide access for hunting, fishing and other recreation activities. We also will be paving and reconstructing a portion of HW 420-1 which accesses private land and serves as a through route from TN to NC for recreationists visiting the Tellico area. Closed roads and trails will be stabilized and rehabilitated to eliminate future sedimentation into the Tellico River," Hilliard said.
"While I realize that our OHV recreationists are understandably disappointed with this decision on Tellico, I want to reassure our OHV users that we are committed to maintaining other OHV trail opportunities on the National Forests in North Carolina which are located on more suitable sites" said Hilliard.
Other national forest OHV trail systems in North Carolina include:
Wayehutta, Nantahala NF, 21 miles (21 miles ATV and motorcycle),
Brown Mountain, Pisgah NF, 34 miles (6 miles 4WD, 27 miles ATV, 34 miles motorcycle)
Badin Lake, Uwharrie NF, 16 miles (16 miles 4WD, ATV and motorcycle)
Black Swamp, Croatan NF, 8 miles (8 miles 4WD, ATV and motorcycle)

Cash for Clunkers

Cash for Clunkers

This Saturday I thought that I would check out the new vehicles at my local junk yard. Finding there was about 50 Cash for clunkers cars new to the lot – I was curious to see if any of them were Jeeps. By gollies there was… I found 3 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ’s that I removed lots of trim goodies both for need now and later. Having a lot of fun pulling used stuff off that I had paid premium dollars for earlier. I ran across a 1992 Jeep Cherokee and it was exactly like my sons. One of the things that we always do when at the Junk yard is to check out the mileage on the Cherokees to see if they can beat my sons at 255,000 miles. With his in need of a motor and the Jeep being so old we have been looking for a good take out instead of rebuilding his. Here is where it broke my heart. The Jeep that I was looking at had its engine killed thru the chemicals that the dealer had to install in the motor to get the “Clunkers” money. This little Jeep only had 125,000 miles on it and had many more miles to go. This could have been the perfect donor motor for his Cherokee except its life was terminated before its time.
I know that “Clunkers” was the government’s way to try and get the car market moving. guessing it did work for a while. But to a gear head who likes to work on cars and a guy who refuses to make car payments. The mark of the devil (Yellow paint across the spark plugs) will ever bring tears to my eyes. I hope that this was a one time program that will not continue to kill the cars that we love. To you it might be just an old junk car. To me they are vehicles that just need a new driveway to live in.

Ready Lift 69-6000 SST Hybrid Lift Kit 2007-2009 Jeep Wrangler JK in stock and shipping from PowerandPlay.com
2007-2009 Jeep Wrangler JK Owners, this is the mild lift kit system you been waiting for is finally here. After nearly a full year of R&D testing to make sure ReadyLift offers the best mild lift kit for the Jeep JK Wrangler, ReadyLift is happy to announce this high-quality lift kit is ready to be installed on your vehicle. The ReadyLift 69-6000 SST Mild Lift Kit will raise the front of your Jeep Wrangler JK 3.0 inches and 2.0 inches in the rear. Rather than replace your proven OEM springs or shocks, ReadyLift incorporated their proven spring spacer technology into this comprehensive package which allows you to retain your OEM coil springs which translates into retaining the stock ride quality. You don't need to have to deal with a rough ride from other kits that replace your springs and shocks. This kit has it all and is done RIGHT! Tough powder coated steel front and rear spring spacers provide the altitude adjustment while our Trac Bar/ pan hard bar relocation bracket and shock extensions work together to keep that factory suspension and alignment geometry. That is very important if you want your Jeep JK to ride and handle properly. We even developed front and rear bump stop extension brackets and included them in the kit to help maintain the OEM compression travel. This rugged new Jeep SST Lift Kit comes with all necessary hardware and instructions, as well as a Lifetime Limited Warranty on our products. Installation of the ReadyLift 69-6000 Jeep JK Wrangler SST Lift Kit System allows for use of up to 35 inch tall tires. ReadyLift rigorously tested this lift kit system using 35 inch tires on 18 inch wheels which proved to be a nice combination even when flexing the suspension during crawling trials. ReadyLift 69-6000 Features:
· Keeps your factory ride - Guaranteed · Will never wear, break or fail - Guaranteed · Toughest finish – Guaranteed · Safest way to lift - Guaranteed · Provides a true 3.0 front and 2.0" Rear Lift - Guaranteed · Amplifies the Jeep Suspension Design · Allows for up to a 35" tire

My son has a Drug problem

My son has a Drug problem…

Recently I have figured out that my son has a drug problem and it is his moms and my fault. Since he was a baby we have drug him to church, drug him to school, drug him to karate and drug him to band. Guessing one of the worst drugs he was given was all my fault. I drug him to Southern Four Wheel Drive Association meetings and events. We drug him thru high school kicking and screaming to graduation. If we can stay on track he will graduate from UTI NASCAR Technical Institute next fall. He was part of an extremely talented high school band that is award winning and was for 4 years (that his mom and dad still chaperones). He has completed one Black belt in Ken-po and if he does well he will become a third degree black belt in Taekwondo this winter (less than 0.5% of all people who start Taekwondo reach this level). Another mistake I made, was allowing my son grow up listening to the likes of Bill O’Riley, Shawn Hanity and the worst David Borum. He has developed in to a very conservative young man who can hold his own with his piers and even teachers on current events and the politics of today.
One of the drugs that were pushed on him early on in life was being drug to the SFWDA “Dixie Run”. He developed deep rooted friendships with kids in the association that he still has contact with today. These kids communicate thru Face Book and My Space even developing a My Space group titled “Dixie Run”. They meet up at High School Football games and band competitions just to catch up what is going on in life.
Last summer the kid got a job as a courtesy clerk at Food City (we called them bag boys). He worked hard and saved his money. He then wasted his money by buying a 1992 Jeep Cherokee XJ that is worn out. What really scares me is that you can see the drug part kicking in. He loves that Jeep and can not see that in reality it is a piece of junk, but to him it is a jewel. He had to work hard to get it in running order which has allowed us to spend time together – “It’s a Jeep thing I think you do understand”.

What got me to write this is that for getting close to 25 years I have had the question ask of me “What does Sothern do for me”? Well I have a hundred different answers that I can give you but I think that I am fast learning what Southern has done for me. It has done exactly what I was hoping for. I have had the chance to enjoy the outdoors with my son and see him develop in to what I hope is a good man. I have seen the effects of a little event we started years ago make life long friends even into a second generation. It has been the pleasure of getting to meet and be part of a great Southern family that really “cares” about each other. Years ago I had a member tell me why do you get so up-set this is only a hobby? Nope – it has been a life teaching experience for me that I will battle to the very end. I want to do all I can to make sure the Great Tellico OHV area stays open for my son and his friends to enjoy well into the future.

Our children are faced with so many problems and issues every day just like their parents. Maybe looking back at the last 17 years – Drugs are the answer…. We will see~!

Happy Trails,

Disturbing trend that is beginning to affect US wildlife

The photo above captures a disturbing trend that is beginning to affect US wildlife.

Animals that were formerly self-sufficient are now showing signs of belonging to the Democratic Party... as they have apparently learned to just sit and wait for the government to step in and provide for their care and sustenance.

This photo is of a Democratic black bear in Montana nicknamed Bearack Obearma.

PLEASE: TAKE TEN MINUTES FOR TELLICO NOW!

PLEASE:  TAKE TEN MINUTES FOR TELLICO NOW!  We need you to send in comment letters to the Forest Service.  Pass this on to your friends and fellow OHVers.

UPDATE ON THE TELLICO EFFORT:
BRC, UFWDA, and SFWDA have all teamed up to fight the battle for Tellico.  Thanks to all who responded to our Phase 1 alert and have written, called and visited their elected officials about the USFS proposed closure of Tellico.  We still need those calls and letters to continue.  Don't let up.

The letters to your congressmen are working!  Jay Bird from SFWDA and Greg Mumm from BRC will be going back to Washington, D.C. to follow up with some offices early next week.  At this late date phone calls will work the best.  Please follow up on your letters to those who represent you.

For more information and background, see our previous alert here: http://www.sharetrails.org/alerts/?alert=958

Now we are shifting to Phase 2.  It is important and it is time to respond to the Forest Service's draft Environmental Assessment with comments.  We've made this very easy for you with an online letter generator (http://www.sharetrails.org/letters/letter.php?id=39).   All it takes is for you to click here  and there is a very easy process set up for you to send in your comments.

It is vital that you take action to Rescue Tellico.  The Forest Service has told us what they want to do and it is incumbent on the OHV community to change their mind.  We NEED to generate as many letters as possible, so:

PLEASE TAKE TEN MINUTES FOR TELLICO NOW!  The deadline is fast approaching so don't put it off.  Click here and help by sending in your comment letter.  You CAN make a difference.

As always, this has been a long and expensive fight and we ask that you help us to sustain the ongoing effort with your donations.  You can donate simply and easily online at www.sharetrails.org/rescue-tellico .
Thank you for your help!

SFWDA, UFWDA, and BRC

If you would prefer to send in your own letter, we encourage you to do so.  Below are some talking points to help you with that effort.

Letters need to be sent to:

National Forests in North Carolina
Attn: Candace Wyman
160 A Zillicoa Street, Asheville, NC 28801

Letters may be emailed to:

Email: comments-southern-north-carolina-nantahala-tusquitee@fs.fed.us

Be sure to put in the reference line to the project:

RE: Transportation System and Related Recreation Management Actions for the Upper Tellico Off-Highway Vehicle System and Temporary Closure of the Upper Tellico OHV System
Nantahala National Forest: Cherokee County, North Carolina

It is important to tell the Forest Service why Tellico is important to you and your family.

Oppose the temporary closure of the Upper Tellico OHV System effective April 1, 2009 and ask the Forest Supervisor to reconsider that decision.

  • The emergency closure is unwarranted and unjustified based on the information provided.
  • Planning for many historic and permitted events in the area are and have been underway for some time now based on the good faith of the Forest Service and the originally proposed action for planning in the area.  The immediate economic impact to the surrounding communities of this temporary closure order is devastating and cannot be replaced.  Communities affected by this sudden change in management are historically dependent on money brought into the area by OHV recreation and these events.
  • The decision for the emergency closure prior to the decision on the draft environmental assessment appears to point to a pre-determined outcome for the environmental assessment.

The Forest Service should/needs to conduct more complete planning.

  • The draft environmental assessment needs to address findings and conclusions of the independent report from Caliber Engineering recently provided to the Forest Service which conflicts with much of the findings and the internal studies of the Forest Service in the draft environmental assessment.
  • The draft EA does not consider the report commissioned by and provided to the Forest Service by the Enterprise Team, USFS Trails Unlimited, assessing the Upper Tellico OHV System.  This report is also in conflict with the findings reflected in the Draft EA.
  • Neither the Caliber study nor the Trails Unlimited report recommended closure of trails in Tellico.  Both concluded the trails could be sustainably managed.
  • Failure by the Forest Service to consider other sources of sedimentation invalidates agency implication that the OHV system is the cause of high turbidity measurements.  This failure leads to an inaccurate and unsupported conclusion that closure of the OHV system will resolve turbidity issues, if such exist.

Ask that the Forest Service to conduct additional study and planning in an Environmental Impact Statement.

  • Given the potentially devastating economic impact to the local communities alone (as cited in the University of Tennessee survey), a finding of no significant impact cannot be a determined outcome.
  • The range of alternatives should be developed utilizing the additional science and information provided in both the Caliber report and the Trails Unlimited report discussed previously.

The Forest Service needs to exhaust all possible options to mitigate the issues prior to closure.

  • The Forest Service must also recognize that closing the opportunity was never the intent or desire of the interested stakeholders.
  • Proper management for the use is the better solution.
  • Closure alone will not solve the stated issues.  Mitigation of those issues still must take place.
  • Resolving those challenges in partnership with the OHV community provides both the manpower and additional funding from the private sector necessary for proper mitigation.

Be honest, professional and polite.  Most importantly, be timely.  Don't put it off.

For more information and background, see our previous alert on Tellico here:  http://www.sharetrails.org/alerts/?alert=958
