House Says Military Can Keep NASCAR Sponsorships

House Says Military Can Keep NASCAR Sponsorships

It was another NASCAR race to the finish, but it wasn't at the track. It was on Capitol Hill, where in these economically tough times some members of Congress didn't think it was a smart idea for the military to be spending millions on professional sports sponsorships as a recruiting tool.
The focal point of the debate was the $26.5 million the National Guard will spend this year to sponsor Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s car. The Guard argued it was money well-spent given how Earnhardt's popularity gets it more value and exposure for its brand beyond what it is paying for the contract.
Late Thursday night, in a close 216 to 202 vote, the House of Representatives struck down a bipartisan amendment that would have cut $72 million from next year's $608 billion defense spending bill slated for professional sports sponsorships used to help with military recruiting. The military services sponsor a wide range of professional sports, including bass fishing tournaments and the Ultimate Fighting Championship, but it was the National Guard's sponsorship of Earnhardt's car that drew all the attention.

Collector Car Appreciation Day Celebrates the Common Threads of Our Automotive Family

A rich fabric has been woven into our experience as Americans by the automotive hobby and the traditions that guide it. Although the variety of shapes, styles and ages of our prized collector cars is incredibly diverse, sharing our affinity for unique vehicles can create or even strengthen a common lifelong bond between family and friends. On July 13, honoring this time-tested passion among our enthusiast family, is the greatest gift surrounding our hobby’s day of recognition: Collector Car Appreciation Day. For the third year in a row, the second Friday in July will again demonstrate this united spirit. Earlier this year, the U.S. Senate passed Senate Resolution 452 at SEMA’s request. New Mexico, Hawaii, New York and West Virginia have also issued proclamations recognizing the occasion, while several other states and territories are pursuing similar initiatives. There is still time to get involved. Individuals, car clubs and business owners have been registering their gatherings for inclusion on the SEMA Action Network (SAN) website. However you choose, please pay tribute to our hobby’s special day by holding or attending a celebration near you. Encourage others to follow suit. Let’s get those cars and trucks out of the garage and onto the road! READ MORE PowerandPlay.com Staff
