House Says Military Can Keep NASCAR Sponsorships

It was another NASCAR race to the finish, but it wasn't at the track. It was on Capitol Hill, where in these economically tough times some members of Congress didn't think it was a smart idea for the military to be spending millions on professional sports sponsorships as a recruiting tool.

The focal point of the debate was the $26.5 million the National Guard will spend this year to sponsor Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s car. The Guard argued it was money well-spent given how Earnhardt's popularity gets it more value and exposure for its brand beyond what it is paying for the contract.

Late Thursday night, in a close 216 to 202 vote, the House of Representatives struck down a bipartisan amendment that would have cut $72 million from next year's $608 billion defense spending bill slated for professional sports sponsorships used to help with military recruiting. The military services sponsor a wide range of professional sports, including bass fishing tournaments and the Ultimate Fighting Championship, but it was the National Guard's sponsorship of Earnhardt's car that drew all the attention.

2013 Ford F-150 Revealed

Earlier this week, Ford unveiled the ’13 F-150—a refreshed version of the pickup. Changes include new front-end styling and an infusion of technologies, such as MyFord Touch voice-activated driver controls and high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps. There is also a new Limited luxury model and availability of the 6.2L V8 engine, electronic-locking rear axle and additional features, such as Hill Descent Control. Outside, the F-150 lineup gets new two- and three-bar grilles, but all models still retain recognizable F-Series cues highlighted on the XLT model. The new, L-shaped HID projector headlamps are available to deliver improved visibility and increased driver confidence, according to Ford. The F-150 will also now offer new 18- and 20-in. wheels in various trim packages. Ford’s telescoping and power-folding trailer-tow side-view mirrors will now be available on the F-150 to provide flexibility and convenience when operating in tight quarters. F-150 pickups are available in three new hues, including Blue Jeans Metallic, Kodiak Brown Metallic and Ruby Red Clearcoat Metallic. There are now four engines available on the F-150; each is mated to an electronic six-speed automatic transmission with tow/haul mode and tow packages. Effort to Exempt Pre-1981 Vehicles From California’s Emissions Inspection Requirement Dropped for the Year

Legislation (S.B. 1224) to exempt all motor vehicles prior to the ’81 model year from the emissions inspection requirement will not be reconsidered by the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee after failing its initial vote. According to bill sponsor Senator Doug LaMalfa, “Although the bill was granted reconsideration, the opponents contend the exemption is intended as a means of ignoring the effects of pollution caused by older, high-emissions vehicles rather than a legitimate benefit for classic car collectors whose vehicles are rarely driven. Employee-Owned Phones Can Be a Not-So-Cool Security Risk

While tech-giddy employees are prone to fawn over every new iThing smuggled into the workplace—devices that are often used in violation of company policy—IT security pros see something very different: a security breach waiting to happen. The hard fact is that many of those unauthorized devices can slash gaping holes in company security systems in a nanosecond, exposing company data and applications to hackers. Indeed, even some authorized devices keep security IT up at night, since their current software solution may not be designed to handle some of the brand-new phones and tablets.

“‘Bring your own device’ can be a double-edged sword for enterprise IT departments,” said Zeus Kerravala, principal at ZK Research. “On one hand, there are great productivity gains to be had by enabling workers to use their own devices on the business network. On the other, provisioning, securing and managing those devices is a nightmare for IT.”

The reason? Company security IT personnel are able to safeguard the company network only when they know ahead of time what kind of smartphones and tablets will be logging into the system. Add a new smartphone on the sly—with a foreign operating system and apps that may be riddled with viruses—and all of security’s carefully coded defenses can be shredded in an instant.

Even worse, the security tsunami created by unanticipated gadgets is expected to grow more ferocious in the coming year, tech experts said. About 48% of smartphones at the workplace these days are chosen by employees rather than IT departments, according to a December 2011 study released by market research firm Forrester. And rarely do employees even consult with IT to determine if the company’s computer pros can secure those phones.

93-year-old Florida woman retires her ’64 Mercury after 576,000 miles on the road

These days, most people consider themselves lucky if a new car lasts 5 to 10 years. Make it to 100,000 miles in your vehicle, and the car company might make a commercial about you. That makes 93-year-old Rachel Veitch a notable exception. Veitch is retiring her 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente after more than 576,000 miles on the road.

"I am legally blind, so I can no longer drive my lovely Chariot," Veitch told FoxNews.com. "They don't have to take it away, I would not dream of driving that car again." The car itself is fine, but Veitch has macular degeneration in both her eyes, making her legally blind. After running a red light in March, she decided to voluntarily give up the vehicle she's been driving since Lyndon Johnson occupied the White House.

"I have taken it in stride," she said. "I don't have cancer, I don't have Lou Gehrig's disease. I am lucky."

Yet for all the miles she has put on her vehicle, it doesn't come close to the world record. The Truth About Cars blog wrote that Irv Gordon's 1966 Volvo P1800 is scheduled to reach 3 million miles this year. Gordon has held the record in the Guinness Book of World Records for most miles on a noncommercial vehicle since 1998.

Even without the world record, Vietch is fond of noting that the car has outlasted three marriages. Mechanically, it's worn through three sets of shocks, 18 batteries and eight mufflers. Veitch bought the car in February 1964 for just $3,289.

She credits the longevity to a "near-obsessive" approach to the car's maintenance. "I've never been a destructive person and I've just taken care of everything, except my husbands," she told FoxNews.
