Mopar offers pickup conversion for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Off-road king Jeep is offering a new kit that transforms a four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited into a two-door Jeep pickup truck. The Mopar JK-8 kit will cost $5,499.

The kit can be installed by a dealer, according to Jeep, or by skilled shade-tree mechanics. The setup comes in one Mopar-stamped crate containing a steel bed, inner and outer bed sides, sport-bar extensions, Freedom panel assemblies, a fiberglass hardtop and bulkhead. It comes with a three-year/36,000-mile warranty.

Mopar first revealed the JK-8 kit at this year's Moab Jeep Safari in Utah.

The kit is based on the popular Jeep Scrambler CJ-8 from the 1980s. The steel pickup bed measures 44 inches by 50 inches, and the fiberglass hardtop is removable for an open-air experience. A special badge is featured on the left rear quarter-panel of each kit, signifying the heritage of the Scrambler.

Jeep gives a quick rundown on disassembly and reassembly, and it seems the only difficult parts are drilling out the spot welds and removing the rear sport bar along the B-pillars. During reassembly, there is some welding required.

The components of the kit are delivered unfinished and will need to be painted.

It appears to be not much more than a weekend of wrenching, and maybe less.

Investigation into Ford F-150 trucks' fuel-tank straps is expanded

It’s not how most people would want to generate sparks, driving the Ford F-150, the country’s bestselling truck, as its leaking fuel tank drags along the road.
But that’s happened to nine owners of the popular Ford pickup, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Regulators there have expanded an existing investigation into the matter to cover 2.7 million vehicles from model years 1997 to 2001.
The investigation stops short of a recall, though such actions often result in them eventually.

Regulators said that one or both of the steel straps securing the fuel tank to the truck’s frame could corrode and break, causing the tank to tilt down or fall to the road.

If either scenario occurs while driving, friction with the ground could open a hole in the loose tank, regulators said. Sparks from the dragging metal could ignite leaking fuel.

SEMA Joins “Save the Salt Coalition” to Promote Preservation of Bonneville Salt Flats

SEMA has joined a number of prominent organizations to form the “Save the Salt” Coalition to protect the Bonneville Salt Flats (BSF) from continued deterioration due to salt brine removal from potash mining. SEMA and the Coalition are working with government officials, mine operators and others to develop a permanent program to replenish the salt.

Founding members of the Coalition include SEMA, the SEMA Action Network, the Bonneville Nationals (BNI), Save the Salt Foundation, Source Interlink Media, Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) and Utah Salt Flats Racing Association (USFRA). Doug Evans, executive vice president of Source Interlink Media, has been named chairman of the “Save the Salt Coalition.”
