Investigation into Ford F-150 trucks' fuel-tank straps is expanded

It’s not how most people would want to generate sparks, driving the Ford F-150, the country’s bestselling truck, as its leaking fuel tank drags along the road.
But that’s happened to nine owners of the popular Ford pickup, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Regulators there have expanded an existing investigation into the matter to cover 2.7 million vehicles from model years 1997 to 2001.
The investigation stops short of a recall, though such actions often result in them eventually.

Regulators said that one or both of the steel straps securing the fuel tank to the truck’s frame could corrode and break, causing the tank to tilt down or fall to the road.

If either scenario occurs while driving, friction with the ground could open a hole in the loose tank, regulators said. Sparks from the dragging metal could ignite leaking fuel.

SEMA Joins “Save the Salt Coalition” to Promote Preservation of Bonneville Salt Flats

SEMA has joined a number of prominent organizations to form the “Save the Salt” Coalition to protect the Bonneville Salt Flats (BSF) from continued deterioration due to salt brine removal from potash mining. SEMA and the Coalition are working with government officials, mine operators and others to develop a permanent program to replenish the salt.

Founding members of the Coalition include SEMA, the SEMA Action Network, the Bonneville Nationals (BNI), Save the Salt Foundation, Source Interlink Media, Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) and Utah Salt Flats Racing Association (USFRA). Doug Evans, executive vice president of Source Interlink Media, has been named chairman of the “Save the Salt Coalition.”

New Camaro ZL1 and Charger SRT8 Stun Attendees at this year’s Chicago Auto Show

This year’s Chicago Auto Show took place as usual in the colossal McCormick Place exhibition center, debuting musclecars, new truck models and quite a few customs and concepts enthusiasts will appreciate. For the army of media in attendance, the talk of the show might have been Chevrolet’s unveiling of the Camaro ZL1. Chevrolet describes the ZL1 as the highest-performing Camaro and the most technically advanced car ever developed in its class. It is planned for launch at the beginning of 2012.

The Camaro ZL1 will be the fastest Camaro ever offered by Chevrolet; official estimates of the car’s capabilities will be released later in 2011 as testing nears completion. The ZL1 also features technologically advanced and highly developed chassis and suspension systems for track-ready handling and braking power. According to Chevrolet spokesmen on hand at the show, rigorous development of the ZL1 is ongoing.

Another big hit with the attending media was the Dodge Charger SRT8, set to launch later this calendar year with a 6.4L Hemi V8 engine. The engine will be rated at an estimated 465 hp and 465 lb.-ft. of torque for power across a significantly wider rpm range than the current 6.4 Hemi. Fuel efficiency is enhanced by an adaptive valve exhaust system. Paddle shifters and a two-mode adaptive damping suspension are among the features that will enable spirited driving on the road and at the racetrack.


Ralph Gilles, senior vice president of product design and president and CEO of the Dodge Car Brand, Chrysler Group LLC, spoke about the car at the show.

“The new ’12 Dodge Charger SRT8 builds on the iconic four-door fastback coupe design of the all-new Charger and adds a much larger power band across the rpm range, along with intelligent performance attributes and safety and creature comforts for customers who are passionate about performance driving,” Gilles said.

Last week, Tennessee received additional good news as it seeks to brand itself as the number one destination for high quality jobs in the South. Wacker Chemical, a worldwide manufacturer of numerous products, hosted a groundbreaking at the location of its soon-to-open operations facility in Bradley County. The company announced it would invest $1.45 billion into the plant—the largest single private investment in the Chattanooga-area.
The company joins other corporate giants who have recently joined the growing number of top-tier companies to call the Volunteer State home like Volkswagen, Hemlock Semiconductor, Amazon, and others.
One Representative from the area stated, “Bradley County and East Tennessee are leading the way back in our state from the depths of the Great Recession because of great projects like this new Wacker Chemie facility.” The Governor also stated his hope that bringing in a company like Wacker would promote further growth. Another Legislator for the area noted, “Wacker increased its investment in Bradley County, adding nearly a half-billion additional dollars and 150 more jobs to the originally planned 500 positions.”
