My son has a Drug problem…
Recently I have figured out that my son has a drug problem and it is his moms and my fault. Since he was a baby we have drug him to church, drug him to school, drug him to karate and drug him to band. Guessing one of the worst drugs he was given was all my fault. I drug him to Southern Four Wheel Drive Association meetings and events. We drug him thru high school kicking and screaming to graduation. If we can stay on track he will graduate from UTI NASCAR Technical Institute next fall. He was part of an extremely talented high school band that is award winning and was for 4 years (that his mom and dad still chaperones). He has completed one Black belt in Ken-po and if he does well he will become a third degree black belt in Taekwondo this winter (less than 0.5% of all people who start Taekwondo reach this level). Another mistake I made, was allowing my son grow up listening to the likes of Bill O’Riley, Shawn Hanity and the worst David Borum. He has developed in to a very conservative young man who can hold his own with his piers and even teachers on current events and the politics of today.
One of the drugs that were pushed on him early on in life was being drug to the SFWDA “Dixie Run”. He developed deep rooted friendships with kids in the association that he still has contact with today. These kids communicate thru Face Book and My Space even developing a My Space group titled “Dixie Run”. They meet up at High School Football games and band competitions just to catch up what is going on in life.
Last summer the kid got a job as a courtesy clerk at Food City (we called them bag boys). He worked hard and saved his money. He then wasted his money by buying a 1992 Jeep Cherokee XJ that is worn out. What really scares me is that you can see the drug part kicking in. He loves that Jeep and can not see that in reality it is a piece of junk, but to him it is a jewel. He had to work hard to get it in running order which has allowed us to spend time together – “It’s a Jeep thing I think you do understand”.
What got me to write this is that for getting close to 25 years I have had the question ask of me “What does Sothern do for me”? Well I have a hundred different answers that I can give you but I think that I am fast learning what Southern has done for me. It has done exactly what I was hoping for. I have had the chance to enjoy the outdoors with my son and see him develop in to what I hope is a good man. I have seen the effects of a little event we started years ago make life long friends even into a second generation. It has been the pleasure of getting to meet and be part of a great Southern family that really “cares” about each other. Years ago I had a member tell me why do you get so up-set this is only a hobby? Nope – it has been a life teaching experience for me that I will battle to the very end. I want to do all I can to make sure the Great Tellico OHV area stays open for my son and his friends to enjoy well into the future.
Our children are faced with so many problems and issues every day just like their parents. Maybe looking back at the last 17 years – Drugs are the answer…. We will see~!
